Private Online Piano Tuition
Geography doesn't need to dictate who you study piano with. I offer private online piano lessons for adults and serious under-16s who would like to work with me, but who are unable to attend my Notting Hill piano studio in person.
Online lessons follow exactly the same musical principles as my studio teaching. We establish a clear direction based on your experience, interests and ambitions, while leaving room for questions, exploration and the discoveries that inevitably arise as your playing develops.
Does Learning Piano Online Really Work?
I was initially sceptical about teaching piano online. Like many music professionals, I assumed that being in the same room would always be essential. Covid 19 and the experience of online teaching changed my mind.
Online piano lessons have proved remarkably effective, particularly with adult students. Modern video technology allows us to work closely on repertoire, technique, interpretation and musicianship, while screen sharing and the ability to exchange scores, recordings and other source materials can offer practical advantages of their own.
Where geography and circumstances allow, I still enjoy teaching students face-to-face. But online tuition is no longer something I regard simply as 'the next best thing'. For the right student, it is a highly effective way to study and for those who are outside my catchment area, allows people access to my unique skill set and
Develop Your Music, Wherever You're Based
My approach is not based simply on learning a succession of pieces. I want students to understand the music they are playing and develop the skills that allow them to become increasingly confident and independent musicians.
That can include classical and contemporary repertoire, harmony, improvisation, sight-reading and the listening skills that enable musicians to recognise, understand and reproduce what they hear. For students working towards formal qualifications, I provide preparation for recognised examination boards in the UK.
The content of lessons is determined by the individual rather than by a fixed online teaching programme. A returning pianist may need something quite different from an advanced player, just as somebody interested in jazz, soul or contemporary music will require a different emphasis from somebody concentrating primarily on classical repertoire.
Who Are Online Piano Lessons For?
Online piano lessons can work particularly well for adults who already have access to a piano or suitable keyboard and who want serious, structured tuition without being restricted to the teachers available in their immediate area.
It can also provide continuity for my own existing students who are travelling, temporarily away from London or unable to attend the studio in person.
The important consideration isn't where you are, but whether I am the right teacher for what you want to achieve.
Studying Piano With Me Online
The starting point is an initial 'trial' lesson in which we discuss your musical background, what you currently play, what you would like to develop and any particular challenges or ambitions you have.
From there, we can establish a direction for your lessons that is structured enough to provide meaningful progress while remaining flexible enough to respond to your development as a musician.
With more than four decades of professional performing, recording and broadcast experience, alongside formal musical training, I bring exactly the same perspective to an online lesson as I do to a student sitting beside me in my Notting Hill piano studio.
